After years of speculation, it has finally happened. Actor Dileep filed for divorce from his wife of 14 years, Manju Warrier, at the Ernakulam Family Court yesterday.
However Dileep has specified that the content of the petition he has filed be kept confidential, said his lawyer, Philip Varghese. "Since speculation about the reasons for the divorce might affect their and their daughter's personal lives, Dileep has requested for privacy and an in-camera trial," said Philip. It is indeed true that Dileep has filed for divorce on grounds of cruelty, he added. The couple has been living separately for more than one year. Dileep and Manju have to appear at the court on July 23.
It seems to be no coincidence that the move occurred within weeks of the release of Manju Warrier's comeback film How Old Are You, which is a box office hit. Incidentally, the film is all about a middle-aged woman who finds her own identity after 14 years of marriage with a man who suppresses her dreams and ambitions.
Although Dileep had declared earlier that whether to act or not was entirely Manju's decision, he contradicted himself recently. He revealed that he had told director Priyadarshan that he doesn't want his wife to act in the latter's film, or any film, for that matter.
Reports of the two filing for divorce had surfaced every now and then, but they had turned out to be fake.
