Californian courts introduce one day divorce programmes

Californian courts introduce one day divorce programmesA number of courts in California have introduced free one day programmes to assist couples who are divorcing without a lawyer.

The Superior Courts of Sacramento and San Diego have launched similar schemes.

The programmes are designed for individuals who have already filed a divorce petition with the courts and served their spouse with legal papers, and allow participants to complete the divorce process in a single day. Most participants have already reached an agreement with their partners regarding childcare and the division of property and assets.

The divorce programmes were introduced as an alternative to the typical scenario, in which unrepresented individuals file their paperwork with overstretched and underfunded courts and are then left waiting months for a response.

Judge Maureen F Hallahan, who sits in the family law division of the San Diego Superior Court, told the New York Times:

“The reality is, people are going to do it without lawyers, and we had to accommodate that.”

She added:

“This is designed to help people get through the system.”
